Founder, Illinois for All |
Sameena Mustafa ran for the United States House of Representatives in Illinois’ 5th District against the Democratic incumbent, Mike Quigley, in the March 2018 Illinois primary. Endorsed by the Justice Democrats, the slate behind Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib, she ran a grassroots-funded campaign refusing all corporate PAC donations as a first-time candidate. The only Asian and Muslim woman running at the federal level in Illinois that cycle, she received almost 25% of the vote despite being outspent almost 10-to-1.
She hosts “To the Left,” a weekly progressive talk show on WCPT 820. With fellow activists, she cofounded Illinois for All, a multi-racial freedom fighter Our Revolution affiliate. A Northwestern University graduate, she serves on the board of League of Women Voters Chicago, advisory boards of State Matters and Chicago Women’s Health Center, and as a leader in the Chicago Medicare for All Coalition.
