Pilot | Barnstorming the US |
Doug Hughes is an activist, writer, pilot, and retired mailman. He’s best known for a flight by ultralight gyrocopter which finished on the lawn of the US Capitol Building in Washington DC. A cargo of 535 letters, one for each member of Congress, was a citizen’s call to action on the crisis of corruption. The publicity that followed the flight provided the opportunity to promote the reforms which activist groups are working to implement.
The Department of Justice was not amused by Doug’s protest. Charges carried penalties of over nine years in prison. Due in no small part to public interest and the persistent media spotlight, he was sentenced to only 120 days in federal prison. The gyro was destroyed by US Marshalls.
While finishing up probation after prison, Doug uttered the four words which strike fear into his wife – “I’ve got an idea.” He’s back with a new gyrocopter and a coast-to-coast aerial plan to publicize the groups committed to ending the evil of big money in politics.
